Hubble Space Telescopes

Works of art such as paintings, books, and even music continue to inspire countless amounts of people, but the art that speaks to me most are the images taken of the universe surrounding us. The Hubble Space Telescope’s Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) images are the quintessential example of what drives me to achieve greatness in life. Not only have they shaped me to be the person I am today, but they’ve given me a better understanding of the honors program at NAU and my education as a whole. For thousands of years, the human race were unaware that there could be more to the universe than just the known planets and our sun. In the 20th century, we had a respectable understanding that there existed many more objects of mass in the known universe, but the findings of the Hubble Space Telescope blew these theories out of the water. Starting around 1993, the telescope managed to collect images of thousands of other distant galaxies not visible to the naked eye. Furthermore, in 2003-2004, the …show more content…
I feel these people fail to absorb the true depth and meaning of these magnificent and ostensibly impossible pictures. Some may just see little specks of light; I see a universe of endless potential and freedom. These "specks" further my curiosity and extend my passion for learning new information. Through gazing in wonder at the seemingly limitless number of galaxies in the images, I have learned to view life with a tremendous amount of humbleness. I have been given a more optimistic outlook towards my future education as a result of the desire to uncover the mysteries of the universe. The questions that have arisen from my changed mind have motivated me to improve not only who I am as a student but also as a person. There is so much in life that we do not understand and everything we do is an opportunity for learning and growth; the Ultra Deep field images embody this

A spiral galaxy is a certain kind of galaxy originally described by Edwin Hubble in his 1936 work The Realm of the Nebulae and, as such, forms part of the Hubble sequence. Spiral galaxies consist of a flat, rotating disc containing stars, gas and dust, and a central concentration of stars known as the bulge.(Sloan) Spiral galaxies resemble spiraling pinwheels, nearly 77% of space consists of spiral galaxies. Though the stars and other visible material contained in such a galaxy lie mostly on a plane, the majority of mass in spiral galaxies exists in a roughly spherical halo of dark matter that extends beyond the visible component, as demonstrated by the universal rotation curve concept. In the Hubble classification scheme: Spiral galaxies…

Observing the displayed works of art within the Herb Ritts photography gallery at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston Massachusetts, one might take notice of inkjet-based printed photograph of a dark lonely night over a barren sandy landscape in New Mexico saturated in blue. This is because in the bottom center of the picture, there is a coiled and illuminated “hose-like” boalum lamp which is large and up-close, and this provides such a sharp visual contrast to everything in the environment around it. It is human nature to pay less attention to things that seem normal, or contextually and situationally similar to everything around it. Likewise, people will tend to notice things that seem juxtaposed and out-of-place with everything else.…

It’s amazing how the same stars we look at today are the same ones, more or less, that all humanity has gazed upon. Plato, Queen Mary, Martin Luther King—the list is endless but these great historical figures have all seen the balls of light and gas that shine in the sky tonight. That’s all they are, floating matter in a vast, unknown space we call “outer space” simply because it resides outside the front door. Space. It envelopes us like an old, soft blanket with moth bites here and stains there.…

What differs from a photo of nature out in the sun with a photo of nature glared from the moon? Depth. The sun holds emphasis on light that contract to the environment which makes them glow. Therefore, the nature that is shown encaptures the distance from the camera to everything in front with the sun as its boundary. The moon works the same way except it overpowers what’s in front by censoring nature with darkness, making the photo apparent only to the moon than everything else surrounding it.…

Humans have always looked at the heavens and wondered about the nature of the objects seen in the night sky. With the development of rockets and the advances in electronics and other technologies in the 20th century, it became possible to send machines and animals and then people above Earth’s atmosphere into outer space. Well before technology made these achievements possible, however, space exploration had already captured the minds of many people, not only aircraft pilots and scientists but also writers and artists. Many of the things we take for granted as we go about our daily lives from non-stick frying pans and GPS navigation to water purifiers and solar cells are actually derived from space science.…

In John Berger’s essay, “The Suit and the Photograph,” Berger did a superior job at describing the difference between each photograph and their meanings behind them. He used a type of approach that I wasn’t familiar with at first, but it then became clear and was successful at doing so. Berger begins by talking about the photographer August Sander, who is responsible for taking the three photos that were discussed in the essay. He mentions that although there are obvious differences between the photos, there are noticeable similarities as well. One of the main similarities is their expression on their faces and the look in their eyes.…
