The world knows Hua Mulan as Disney’s tough, yet pose warrior princess created in the 1990s. What most of the world does not know is that Disney based his hit movie off of the Medieval Chinese Legend: The Legend of Hua Mulan (Disney 2). Both the movie and the legend portray a strong and independent woman who dares to be a warrior. The Legend of Hua Mulan teaches its readers that breaking the barriers of society can be a good thing and that gender stereo types should not limit a female’s sense of empowerment. The hero, Hua Mulan, and the Threshold Guardian, the Chinese. Hua Mulan is a misfit character in a way, never really going with the flow of the feminine way of society. She is a loyal girl to her family and in the legend, volunteers her self in place of her father. “I am young and healthy, and you have no eldest son. If the Emperor needs a solider, then I must be that one” (Chin 7). She fulfills the role of a hero because of her bravery in the Chinese Army and loyalty to her family.
