The weirdest winter sports you need to try (-- removed HTML --)

Most winter sports seem kind of nuts. You can just picture the wintertime boredom that persuaded people to strap planks of wood to their feet, or slide down ice face first. Although typical sports like skiing and luge are now professional sports, there are far more crazy winter activities out there. Here are a few of the winter sports from around the world you need to try.

Yukigassen (-- removed HTML --)

Who doesn’t love a good snowball fight? Well, the Japanese have taken this childhood pastime to a whole other level. Yukigassen, or snow battle, is true warfare. 90 snowballs, two teams, 14 players. Similar to capture the flag, players aim to collect the opponents’ flag and are out if they are hit with a snowball.

One very brave skier is towed by a snowmobile, dirt bike, dogs, or horse and, like waterskiing, mixes in jumps and slaloms along a course. Watch out for people trying this out this winter. It’s only a matter of time before it catches on outside of Europe. Who needs a mountain?
Ice climbing (-- removed HTML --)

Do you love rock climbing but just wish the surface was a bit colder and extra slippery? Then ice climbing is perfect for you! During the winter, these athletes climb frozen waterfalls or ice covered rock facades. Together with their axes and crampons these climbers put simple rock climbing to shame.

Ice sailing (-- removed HTML --)

Extremely popular in places like Austria and Germany, ice sailing puts the wind in your sails all year long. Instead of a boat, imagine a bobsled balanced on bladed runners attached to a large sail. This one-person apparatus allows the driver to whip around the ice in the winter months. It’s kind of like skating with less physical effort.

At Red Scaffold my cousins Gabriel, Josh, Tristan and I ride bikes. Gabriel and I wrap ropes on our back tires to create traction like chains on the rear tires. Consequently, I think the ropes work well on ice and snow, you don’t slide around on the slippery ice and can move well in the snow. My cousin Gabriel and I go through mountainous snow drifts and the ropes help enormously, so we don’t spin out. Last year we wrecked a lot while riding our bikes because the ice was like glass, causing us to slip often.…

The anticipation of getting to this golden treasure was growing with every step I took, every crunchy step. When we finally arrived, I stared down my opponent, the hill, as I mounted my trusty steed, my snow boogie, and cautiously eased my way onto the decline, lightly brushing the snow with my hands for steering. It was a bumpy ride, but I felt like I was riding first class. My routine began to seem rather basic after a while until the hardcore snow fans started to show up. These are the ones who make ramps out of snow.…

I am a melting pot that takes these ideas and turns them into one unique view of the world, my view. One thing that I have observed from my many years of skiing is that bowing to fear is not the way I want to live. I learned this when I had a massive face plant that bloodied my face, broke both my helmet and my goggles, gave me a concussion, and forced my lower lip to inflate to the size of a cocktail wiener. I only remember coming back to full consciousness in the ski patrol hut seeing my normally khaki colored glove now dripping a scarlet red, and a patrolman, who was not the nicest person in the world, continuously nagging “You were skiing out of bounds, I should pull your pass.” On the trip to the hospital my friend Tommy told me that in my dazed condition I was concerned about one thing, what day it was.…

One way for the client to feel comfortable in trying an activity like skiing is to communicate preferences. As the therapist, I would show my client different ways to strengthen their balance with different skiing equipment/ accommodations. Having the client express their own preference or opinion creates a better chance to achieve the goal of improving balance with something enjoyable. Intrinsic motivation will start to grow when the client feels determined to do something. To guide this motivation, I will need to emphasize inherent rewards, and provide reinforcement within their chosen environment of a ski slope.…
