The course HD 361- Social and Political Contexts of Human Development covered topics such as race/ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, class/wealth, ability, and social status oppression and power/privilege. I have a better concept of understanding the meaning of privilege and power in a society inequality. A systemic structure grants privileges to some people but not to everyone. Privilege is inherent in the structure of our society; the way society is organized and functions. Because our privilege is woven into our lives and circumstances, we most often take them for granted, and rarely stop to consider the benefits, unless they are taken away from us. It taught us to show empathy with others went through hardship, treated unfairly and was taken advantage. Under the Same Moon portraits the lives of many undocumented immigrants were struggled to survive when they came to this country. Underprivileged families have been unfairly treated in the justice system. The movie reminds me of my family went through the same experiences and struggles. Many of families took the risk on coming to America and in hope for a better life.
It helped me understand the power of privilege in creating an oppressive system and how eliminating that system is laboratory and transformative for everyone.
