Current Event 8 In the article, “ Military Spending Bill Provision ” written by Alex Horton, it demonstrates the new bill that was passed through the functions of the military bureaucracy and how much importance it emits to individuals. “ The Defense Authorization Bill” was signed by President Trump that was inserted by members by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) and Richard J. Durbin. The purpose of the bill allows Mattis to give active-duty immigrants recruits (one additional year) to wait for background checks to be finalized before they leave into training or combat. It also includes shielding immigrants from contract cancellation as they wait for their drawn-out background checks. The changing of decisions was made because previous rules allowed for two years of waiting time, but it was shown time-consuming and complicated security measures and eventually slowed the

The result from it was over 1,000 enlistees lost their legal status and were under the threat of deportation. Stated by Harris, she says “This legislation will help ensure that they can continue to serve and not fall victim to a slow bureaucratic process. Immigrants have built this country, and these patriots represent the best of our nation.” Although the contracts alone do not shield recruits from deportation, it may provides the Department of Homeland Security a reason to defer removal action if a recruit falls out of status.“The law is a promising sign and provides a temporary reprieve.
