I am a good friend of the Trossman family, but I am also a nursing student in my final year hoping to get a job as an RN in The Hospital for Sick Children (HSC) after I graduate. Over the past ten years I have formed strong relationships with families of children who require constant and complex medical care. Jacob Trossman and Taylor, Cole and Brody Florence are just the few I can name with permission. Prior to nursing school, the parents taught me the skills and knowledge needed to perform each child's needs in order to maintain safety as a priority during our outings. I was able to take them to the park, Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) and even sleepovers at my house without their parents being constantly worried how their children would manage without them nearby. …show more content…
However, with these joyous moments there were also hard times where I provided respite and emotional support to families during challenging times. These friendships have given me multiple opportunities to see the incredible care that HSC provides. With each experience visiting children at HSC, particularly 7C, I gained deeper appreciation for the facility and met more amazing staff who strengthened my desire to pursue a career there. After many years of volunteering working with children of all abilities, I finally decided to attend York University BScN program to gain the knowledge and skills to turn my passion into a career. I am now at the final stages of my schooling and considering my future options and how to achieve my goal. I will be graduating in August and hope to write the NCLEX in September/October after receiving my Authorization to Test. I was wondering how to best prepare myself to attain a job at HSC and what advice you can give to a future nurse who is looking to follow your

Many of the children came from large families who were only able to give them limited attention, despite the fact that they desperately needed large amounts of individualized attention. The care that staff gave these children helped level the playing field for some of them. Despite their differences, all patients, first are foremost, are united by the fact that they are people who just want to improve their heath. As someone who is passionate about connecting with and helping others, I am interested in more than just the medical problems that people might have; I am interested in the patients as people. These experiences made me realize how important understanding the whole patient is.…

There I was able to discover and explore all different medical fields and learned basic health procedures. After a year into the program, I was able to go to clinics and job shadow at different facilities; dialysis, internal medicine, x-ray, emergency room, etc. I got firsthand experience with different healthcare careers and after I finished my rotations, I became interested in the radiology department.…
