As a person who has been passionate about global and cultural issues from a young age, I feel that it is my destiny to work with the U.S. State Department. Since the age of 10, I have studied foreign societies, demographics, geography, politics, and history. As a homeschooled high school student, I learned Spanish language and literature with my grandfather who emigrated from Cuba in 1959. This experience connected me to my heritage and inspired me to broaden my knowledge and understanding of Latin and world cultures. At Holyoke Community College, which I successfully transitioned into as a 16 year-old homeschooled student, I worked with classmates in an Interdisciplinary Politics and Spanish course to pursue a multifaceted approach to learning in line with my personal studies of geography,

I want to better understand the State Department’s development policies with Latin American nations such as the demographically and culturally diverse Brazil. While visiting Rio de Janeiro, a key microcosm of Brazil, I observed the main boulevards as points of interaction between people of all social statuses and backgrounds. A recent IBGE chart shows that more than 60% of Rio de Janeiro city council members are white. I want to join the State Department's diplomatic work with developing nations and remedy the harshness of such unequal political representation by combatting racism and poverty, ensuring human rights and promoting sustainable growth through multiculturally sensitive policies of bilateral action. I believe that my interests, self-directed studies, and experiences will serve me well in an internship with either the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs or the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. I will bring my strong work ethic and critical thinking and communication skills to the bureaus I have
