It consists of a man and woman who marry and begin producing offspring. The man and woman would live under one roof and shared responsibilities for providing for and raising their children. Under the leadership of the parents, children were given guidance and support as they grew that helped them to become strong enough to leave the family unit. Family can have a positive influence, or a negative one, depending on if the family is dysfunctional or healthy in the way the family members relate to each other. A healthy family can be a stronghold for each member. The support of a healthy family gives each member support and strength during times of difficulty and times of celebration. Survival was hard because families did not have the technologies available to them to help them clothe, feed, and protect themselves as we have today. Family members had to work the land to produce food, build suitable shelter, and produce yarn or leather for clothing. Each family member was responsible for contributing in one way or another to the expanded families’ needs for food, shelter, and protection. Members of an extended family tended to have a fierce loyalty to other members of the family as a whole, because they worked so hard together.
