After Beowulf defeats Grendel, there is a moment of peace in the Herot hall. King Hrothgar and his men celebrate and reward Beowulf for his bravery. Unfortunately, Grendel’s mom is still around seeking vengeance for Beowulf killing her son. When she enters Herot, the men brace for an attack. Grendel’s mom becomes fearful and takes another one of Hrothgar’s men and kills him. He was considered one of Hrothgar’s friends. In Beowulf, the author states, “She’d taken Hrothgar’s closest friend, The man he most loved of all men on Earth” (Raffel 1296). Hrothgar has suffered not only from Grendel, but also his mother. He had suffered a lot of grief and pain and needs someone to gain vengeance on now his mother
