The cultural values of Beowulf the epic, and the film Beowulf and Grendel differ greatly. New ideas spread therefore leading to cultural changes based off influence. Characters in the movie aren’t as intense as they are in the poem. Consider the different factors with Beowulf, Grendel, and Hrothgar that all contrast differently between the film and the poem. Beowulf is God-like in the poem. He is respected by all and has all the attributes to being a king. Beowulf, “the strongest of the Geats – greater and stronger than anyone in this world” (110-111) shows that the poems fiction storyline with his superhuman like qualities. Also, Cultural values immense a huge chunk of altercations throughout the two stories. In the poem, Beowulf is God like and fears no such thing, a incredible warrior with no pity for any enemy, while in the movie Beowulf and Grendel, he is more human like and isn’t as savage like as he is in the poem. His attitude seems to change completely at the end of the poem. Grendel in the poem is a monster who attacks any of the Danes for any reason, feared by all and has Hrothgar looking for any way to save his people and land. However, in the film Grendel displays human qualities he mates and reproduces with the witch showing he isn’t just a monster. Also Grendel in the film doesn’t attack Danes unless they do wrong to him such as getting revenge for the death of his father. Finally, Hrothgar, the poem displays the Danish king to be the most respected man to the Danes with much honor in him. Despite his old age, he is a very wise king as well. On the other hand, Hrothgar is a cowardly man who looks to be a beggar towards Beowulf. He portrays a scared man, he is scared of Grendel’s fury and lacks all the qualities of a real king. The contrast between the three main characters and cultural values differ from the poem and the movie

Graham Baker’s adaptation of Beowulf: the unheroic hero. The epic poem, Beowulf, has been the source of inspiration to an incredible amount of artistic pieces: films, novels, songs, comic books, video games and operas. Due to the nature of the poem, every adaptation that has ever been made is different from the other, but most of them respect the epic hero prototype. Even though Baker fills the gaps of indeterminacy in a weird and twisted way, what the film brings up as interesting is that his version of Beowulf does not follow such prototype: Beowulf's personality and motivations are essentially different from those of the poem's hero.…

The stories of Beowulf and Grendel are very similar in many aspects. There is only one major difference. In Beowulf, we do not know what Grendel is thinking, like we do in Grendel. Both stories portray Beowulf and Grendel as monsters, but they are both actually misunderstood humans, not monsters. Being misunderstood is one of the hardest things to be.…

Grendel and Beowulf Comparison/Contrast Essay In Grendel, and the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character is drastically different due to the opposing viewpoints in each work, how the antagonist is viewed, and the reverse role of the hero figure. Grendel, in Beowulf, is seen as this ruthless creature who is killing harmless people while in Grendel is more thoughtful and kind. Because of the different image of the character in the book, the readers are able to connect more with Grendel in the story, Grendel. Unlike the epic poem of Beowulf, John Gardner’s Grendel has many differences, for instance, Grendel’s viewpoint of the story, Beowulf, his view of humans being violent beasts, and the reverse role of being the hero figure.…

Beowulf is an epic poem that has captivated readers for centuries. It tells the story of Beowulf, the “heroes of all heroes” and savior of the Danes and Geats. Beowulf represents what a true hero should be, not just in his time, but throughout history. In contrast, Grendel, his mother and the dragon share characteristics that accurately portray them as villains. So it is only natural that conflict would arise between the virtuous hero and the dangerous villains that around him.…

Specifically regarding the poem, when Beowulf goes to seek out the troll-wife, “Nigh unto a day he endured the depths” (990) For a complete day he held his breath which seems superhuman, giving him an advantage over others. In the movie it becomes apparent to the audience that Grendel is Hrothgar’s son with the troll wife, and that the dragon is Beowulf’s son with the troll wife. The same reason that Hrothgar was so sure that Beowulf was lying about killing the troll wife, is because he too was seduced by her and committed the same sin that Beowulf did. The only difference is that Beowulf fought the dragon himself, which is his monster. Beowulf dealt with the consequences of his own actions, as opposed to Hrothgar who is a coward and asked others to fight his monster.…

In the film for example, King Hrothgar commits suicide, there is no evidence in the text supporting this. The film implies that Beowulf takes interest in the queen, while in the text there is no evidence of any romantic interest among them. This line from the film shows Beowulf’s interest, “Me It's not me he wants, my queen” (Memorable Quotes for Beowulf (2007))? The film states that Beowulf not only had an affair with Grendel’s Mother but also had a child with her. In the movie Beowulf marries the queen after Hrothgar’s death and eventually cheats on her similar to how Hrothgar did.…

The first example of the similarities and differences in the epic poem and the movie is the portrayal of Beowulf. For example he still seeking for fame and glory, he also boasts about himself, and is immensely strong. In the Beowulf passage and movie they throw a party in Herot, where he tells the tales of the victories that he won against monsters and demons. Although, there are some differences between them, an example of this is, in the poem Beowulf was seen as a perfect being but in the movie he is flawed.…

Beowulf was interesting and I enjoyed both the movie and the book, yet in the book Beowulf went home to be king, his warriors fled him, and the dragon was angry about the thief; even though, in the movie, Beowulf was king of Herot, his warriors helped him during battle, and he was the dragon’s father. Beowulf became king according to the book upon his arrival to his homeland; however, in the movie he became king of Herot. Beowulf became king of Herot because Hrothgar jumped from the castle and killed himself, yet in the book Hrothgar died. Beowulf also had no wife, mistresses, or any children during his reign as king in the book.…

The saying “there are two sides to every story” rings especially true when comparing the various personas of Grendel throughout the poem, Beowulf, the story, Grendel, and the YouTube clip shown in class. Grendel’s characterization varies greatly in the movie, book and poem equally. The contrasting viewpoints play off of the theme “Morality vs. Instinct”. Also, Grendel’s character differs based upon the perspective of the writer and his prior experiences with Grendel. However, Grendel’s action remain constant throughout each outlet.…

Beowulf is an inspiring character, showing bravery, leadership, and gratefulness throughout the poem. Hrothgar is the king the reader gets to know the most in Beowulf, he speaks to Beowulf before Beowulf departs about good characteristics and gives him a specific example of what bad kings are. Hrothgar spoke of Heremod and said that he was a bad king because he was uncontrollable and vengeful, he was not loyal and he was never rewarding to his troops. Hrothgar told how Heremod “suffered in the end/ for having plagued his people for so long:/ his life lost happiness. ”(1720-1722)…

Beowulf is considered a heroic figure in the poem, because he protected the Danes from the beasts and in the movie he is shown more as a liar than a hero. Another difference in the book Grendel slays the Danes in the night, while they are sleeping, so that none have the chance to challenge him. But in the movie it shows Grendel bursts into Heorot in the night, but the Danes are awake, and fully witness his killing. In the book, after Grendel's death, his mother goes to Heorot to avenge him, but being weaker than her son, only makes off with a single thane. But in the movie, Beowulf is asleep in Heorot after slaying Grendel when he has a nightmare about Grendel's mother, awaking from it to see that she has silently murdered many of the men Heorot.…

In the Beowulf movie and poem, Grendel’s mother was a seduced; she used her body to get Beowulf’s attention. Regardless of how Grendel’s mother is described as a seduced, however, in the poem, she was a monster but in the movie, she was a human form.
