Why is this? Construction workers or manufactory workers deal with heavier equipment and are in usually more dangerous situations than healthcare workers are.
Two high risk tasks
One high risks task I can think of would be transferring patients. Are the licensed staff looking at the patients care plan as to how they are transferred? Are the medical floor staff communicating with the therapy department in regards to the patient? Prior to transferring the patient for the first time, the staff need to communicate with the other departments, look at their care plan or care card prior to caring for the resident. Medical staff should also ensure that if they are using equipment such as, a mechanical lift that there are at least two people performing the transfer. As of 2013, only 10 states made facilities mandate a SPHP (ANA, 2013). Education is of most importance to ensure workers safety. I would also ensure that care plans or care-care for the individual patients were made readily available to all staff prior to any patient care. All facilities have a Safety meeting held, whether it is weekly, monthly or quarterly, floor staff need to be made a part of that meeting/committee. I would also do “pop-up” rounds to ensure that the staff on the floor are compliant with using equipment (2-person transfer), using gait belt when ambulating or transferring a patient and using a draw sheet while turning/repositioning or lifting up in

Lobbying for safe staffing goes hand in hand with what a labor organization represents. The American Nurses Association works to ensure safe working environments for nurses on a national and state level. Labor laws protect nurses through collective bargaining by encouraging hospital management and executives to follow guidelines on patient-to-nurse ratios for safer practice (Budd et al., 2004). Sine California passed the law that mandated a safe staffing act; there have been seven other states that adopted laws in regard to staffing for nurses. These states include Oregon, Washington, Ohio Illinois, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Texas. The difference between the other seven states and California, however, is that California has a fixed nursing-to-patient ratio. Majority of the other states tend to model the American Nurses Association Safe Staffing Principles model, which only requires that hospitals have staffing committees, consisting of 50-55% nurses who will develop staffing guidelines that cater to the specific hospital’s needs. Oregon requires hospitals develop hospital-wide nurse staffing plans with input from direct care nurses.…

This discussion question is quite prescient as I am drafting a survey for the Hospital where I work concerning what is called Safe Patient Handling and the training surrounding it. From a regulatory standpoint, a Hospital is required to safely handle patients during transfer to treatment, from bed to chair and from another medical device back to bed. Our facility maintains a policy which is considered minimal lift meaning a staff member will utilize equipment to maneuver a patient before using their physical strength in a mechanical fashion to move said patient. I am a member of the Safe Patient Handling Committee and was tasked to draft the survey to determine firstly where and what type of training was needed in Nursing departments and lastly…
