According to the article, Registered nurses ranked fifth of all occupations resulting in a musculoskeletal injury and Nursing assistants reported 25,010 cases, the highest for any occupation (ANA, 2013). Why is this? Construction workers or manufactory workers deal with heavier equipment and are in usually more dangerous situations than healthcare workers are.
Two high risk tasks
One high risks task I can think of would be transferring patients. Are the licensed staff looking at the patients care plan as to how they are transferred? Are the medical floor staff communicating with the therapy department in regards to the patient? Prior to transferring the patient for the first time, the staff need to communicate with the other departments, look at their care plan or care card prior to caring for the resident. Medical staff should also ensure that if they are using equipment such as, a mechanical lift that there are at least two people performing the transfer. Another high risk task would be lifting the patient. A nurse or nursing assistant should never “lift “ a patient by putting their hands on them. As of 2013, only 10 states made facilities mandate a SPHP (ANA, 2013). Education is of most importance to ensure workers safety. I would also ensure that care plans or care-care for the individual patients were made readily available to all staff prior to any patient care. All facilities have a Safety meeting held, whether it is weekly, monthly or quarterly, floor staff need to be made a part of that meeting/committee.
