“Welcome to Victims Inc!, the largest corporation to produce random items. We produce everything from jigsaw puzzles to booklets on depression!” Shouted a portly tour guide as he led a group of nervous potential employees through the halls. The windows alongside the halls displayed hundreds of workers in a moribund state, pale and sickly as they worked in assembly line format. The disparity between the tour guide’s cheerful tone and their surroundings unnerved the new employees. “Um,” says a man near the back of the group, “isn’t there supposed to be employee health benefits?” “Why, of course there are benefits!” says the tour guide, quickly stopping to address the crowd. “Our workers know that humans are only truly happy and healthy when they are being productive, showing efficacy, and earning their paycheck!” states the tour guide. …show more content…
strive to help our employees reach their truest potential. We put them at work whenever humanly possible, leaving them no time for bothersome avocations.” explained the tour guide, who turned back around and continued walking. “We also help possible employees when they make the final decision on whether to work for Victims Inc. I know it might sound strange that someone wouldn’t want to work here, but there are potentials that tend to vacillate. Don’t worry though, through persuasion and other means they always end up working here, always.” The tour guide continued walking with a smile on his face, not at all bothered by the image in the window of a worker collapsing to the ground. This time a fidgeting woman near the front clears her throat to get the guides’ attention. He paused once more and turned to face them, she asks: “If we are required to work so long, what happens if we get sick? Do we get sick

Michelle Chen discusses the consequences of having to work while sick to both one's physical and mental health, in relations of theorists Marx and Durkheim. As Chen examines health, work, and paid leave, I will be discussing what both Marx and Durkheim perspectives would be on this article and what solutions they would provide to this particular issue. I believe that Marx does a better job in explaining the overall issues within this article, whereas Durkheim would provide a more suitable solution to the problem.
