Recently, we have been informed that Laser Tech must lay off 5 percent of its workforce, specifically in the Marketing Group department. As the department’s group supervisor, I have been asked to identify one employee to put on the potential layoff list and one backup recommendation. In order to both maintain an effective, productive workforce and satisfy the Marketing Group department’s responsibilities – product development and market research –, I have considered that the employee to be placed on the potential layoff list is Mark Gonzales. Furthermore, the backup recommendation to be placed on the potential layoff list is Sarah Markham. The remainder of this memo consists of the following:

Furthermore, out of the five major client services Laser Tech provides, four of those services require real-time communication between employees and their clients. Therefore, I have considered client evaluation scores as one my criteria, and this evaluation revolves around four factors that can be found in Table 1 on the right.

The employees’ abilities to respond respectfully and work for their clients’ ideas are two of the most important factors within clients’ evaluation. Laser Tech mainly provides services and not tangible products; therefore, employees’ attitudes are the greatest assets of a services company.

Overall Manager Evaluation Scores
As the manager of marketing, your evaluations on employees are another criteria I considered. Your input influences how employees in the marketing group (1) evaluate products and services that small and midsize business desire and (2) determine which technologies Laser Tech will incorporate. Therefore, your evaluation serves as a checkpoint if employees are completing their work in an appropriate
