Howl’s Moving Castle is a love story about a young girl, Sophie, who finds herself getting cursed by a witch, and a wizard, Howl. There are many clichés about Japanese films that people associate with them, but the artistic yet effective messages and pictures throughout the film make it a must see for any movie lover. Although this movie falls into the animated film category, it is a bit different. It was created through a series of drawn pictures that were put together to make the movie. Creating it this way allowed it to have more detail and creativity in the animation aspect. The characters in this movie conveyed messages that included love, family, and anti-war.

As Sophie learns more about Howl, they become closer. He helped Sophie through her journey to break her curse. Although the love story focuses more on Sophie and Howl, she also meets other characters whom she becomes very close with. Calsifer and Turniphead become two of her closest friends; they all become one family. Sophie then meets Michael, who is Howl’s apprentice. Sophie introduces herself as the cleaning maid. Just like Calsifer, Howl can see that Sophie is under a spell and soon falls in love with Sophie. At this point, I began feel for these characters because of their problems. Howl is misjudged, Calsifer is stuck as being a fire, Sophie is old, Turniphead is stuck as a scarecrow, it all just seems be a little much as the family grows. Along with this great love story, there is also a wonderful message about anti-war.
Howl’s Moving Castle effectively conveys the theme of anti-war. Throughout the film it is obvious to see that Sophie, along with Howl, were both trying to stop the war from happening. By looking at its shell, you would not think this movie to be so analytical, but as you look deeper into it the messages become clear. Howl does not want to participate in the war for either of the opposing sides, for he thinks the war is stupid. This is one of the main reasons why I loved Howl’s Moving
