The purpose of writing “In the Jungle” it’s to make readers appreciate nature, instead of going against it. The persuasive technique is emotional appeal means using words, which appeal to the readers’ emotion. I appreciate the fact the author uses the jungle to admire the beauty of nature and using it as a necessity. And how she is homeless within herself. She shares her personal emotions throughout the text of her audiences, which are the readers through the use of metaphor as a hog. As it mentioned in page 76 the author stated, “Piranha fish live in the lakes, and electric eels. I dangled my fingers in the water, figuring it would be worth it” (Dillard 76). In other words, the author is saying people should take risk in life in order to success because it is not like a piece of cake to succeed in life if there is no effort for it. It can be connected to the essay, “Death of a moth” when the author was asking her readers if they are sure they want to give their lives a writer, if writing is their craft to follow for eternity.

Annie Dillard was born on April 30, 1945. Dillard is an American author and has distributed her work of prose, poetry, and literary criticism. She was a teacher for 21 years at a University, in Middletown, Connecticut named Wesleyan in the English department. While Dillard was growing up, she focuses on her family and her dream rather than herself. As a teenager, she quit attending church because of “hypocrisy”. She loves reading books about nature and explores the outdoors.
