As I reflect back on my life in retirement, I always refer to Clayton Christiansen’s book that inspired me greatly called, How Will You Measure Your Life?” I read this outstanding book my Business Senior Seminar course in college and used it as the basis for guiding my purpose and decisions in life for my career, relationships, and handling issues that challenge my integrity. I will address these topics in this order: (1) my KPMG career, (2) my family and its cohesive culture, and (3) challenges I have faced that were trying to undermine my integrity. My purpose from the beginning was to have an excellent Auditing Career but always to put my family first and to sacrifice for them to have strong familial relationships. First, KPMG had all of the excellent “hygiene factors” such as excellent compensation, benefits plans, and retirement plans as well as job security, intelligent and motivated personnel, and excellent policies that promoted its “high-performance culture.” However, job satisfaction, as Christiansen puts it, does not come from these “hygiene factors.” Instead, it comes from “motivators,” which included the fact that at KPMG, I was always challenged by my work and was always learning and growing. KPMG uses the strategy Christiansen highlights his book about promoting its “High-Performance Culture,” which it describes as a challenging culture where employees bring their “best technical skills, industry experience, and business savvy. KPMG emphasizes its culture by noting that when you start your career at the company it is an “opportunity to continually the bar on your performance” and continuously emphasizes its dedication to high-performance through its training programs and employees through performance reviews that assess your strengths and weaknesses. KPMG’s culture was what mainly motivated me to stay at the company
