Introduction:
Poverty has always been a significantly large problem. The definition of poverty is the state of being extremely poor. So many people around the world have very little income and can barely provide for themselves, let alone if they have a family. There is a certain line known as the poverty line, which is being under the estimated minimum level of income in which those in poverty need to be able to provide for themselves. And in order for someone to be impoverished, they have to be under that line. The number of people in poverty is extremely high, but it is not due to their lack of work ethic. Great countries like America that were once “a poor nation of 3 million …show more content…
The government can be a major help if they are willing to fund programs to provide for the poor. However, in politics there are two sides of the story. “Most Republicans are still pushing for cuts in programs that help low-income people, such as unemployment insurance and food stamps. And Democrats still want to be known mainly as the party of middle-class.” Republicans want to cut the cost on less important things they are funding so that that money can be used for a more important issue, in this case ending poverty. On the other side, Democrats don’t want to cut cost of anything they are funding and mostly keep everything relatively the same. In the mid-70s, President Johnson “made it one of his top five priorities” (1) to end poverty in the U.S. When he did so, “our country cut the poverty rate in half” and this was mainly because “the economy was strong and the unemployment low” (Nixon). This is how work ethic will help reduce poverty in the future. If one country works to fix their economy, that will show other countries that poverty is a serious issue that should be solved. If the unemployment rate is down, that is a sign of people having work, not having a lack of work …show more content…
“In many poor countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, up to one half of the total population live below the poverty line” (Oxford University Press). This means that everyone of these countries have half of their population living in poverty, and when combined with all of the other countries, that means half of the entire continent of Africa lives in poverty. “Over half of the world’s population live on less than $900 a year, and more than a quarter of the world’s population live (one less than $1 a day)’ (Benatar, Upshur). The main reason as to why these numbers are the way they are is because of the 4.4 billion people who live in these developing countries, “over 30 per cent lack access to clean water and essential, and almost a quarter are inadequately nourished” (Benatar, Upshur). This seems to be the main issue as to why so many people are in poverty. Since these people don’t make enough money to provide themselves with things they need to survive, that means they don’t have enough money to pay for things such as education. With education, these people can get a job and receive a fairly good income to provide for themselves and for their
