At the NAACP’s 106th national convention, on July 15, 2015; Mr. President Obama listed a bunch of reasons that the United States should reform the criminal justice system. And some reasons that the government will look more into the American communities and try to give more opportunity and more rights to all the people in the nation. The president also explained the future reform principles. “As the president noted, ‘we’re just at the beginning of this process, and we need to make sure that we stay with it.’ He then laid out the three key areas in which we need to focus on reform: the community, the courtroom, and the cell block.”(Hudson, David) On this Obama just listed what the federal government will be focusing on.
A recent magazine by Mrs. Flores on November the tenth talked about certain key points of prison reform that Obama was talking about. There are three main key points: “low-level drug offenders (with no ties to large organization, cartels, or gangs) will no longer be charged with offenses that include mandatory minimum sentences. The justice department has updated its frame work for evaluating compassionate release for inmates facing compelling circumstances; including old age. DOJ will also expand the use of ‘diversion’ programs such as drug treatment and community service that could be used instead of incarceration.”(Flores Reena) Mrs. Flores basically summarized the key points that Mr. Obama explained in his speeches. Support decreased for rehabilitate programs and increased for keeping offenders incarcerated; many people subscribed to the idea that keeping criminals off the streets is the surest way to keep criminals off the streets is the surest way to keep them from committing more crimes. As a result, the federal government and a growing number of states introduced mandatory sentencing and life terms for habitual criminals. They also limited the use of probation, parole, and time off for good behavior.”(Gale 2007) For most of the prisoners, going to prison means their opportunity to get an education, and also to learn skills for jobs. Some prisons allow their prisoners to receive classes/courses by mail; very few prisons may have teachers visit the facility to teach basics, like reading, writing, mathematics, and maybe some subjects. There are some younger people earn their high school diplomas while serving in prison. Not many were allowed to take college courses, it requires good behavior. All of this is to help prisoner prepare for the outside world after serving their time most of the inmate was able to have an education and developed skills to find a low pay job after being released from prison. Recent studies and data collected show that if the prisoner receives more education, the less chance they have to return to
