While reading the very first section titled The Great War: The World in Upheaval, I thought that the catalyst for war was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, but as I was reading more, I learned that it was more than that. I realized nationalism and the involvement of Russia and Germany made matters worse. Events such as the naval race and colonial disputes made tensions between Britain and Germany grow, which also made the armed conflict inevitable. While reading the section about After the War, I wondered if World War 1 was avoidable. Also, if the U.S. had gone with president Woodrow Wilson’s fourteen points instead of the Treaty of Versailles, would World War 2 be avoidable or happen at all? Was the Treaty of Versailles fair
