Through the novel Atticus is criticized in multiple ways. For example in chapter 23 Bob Ewell say to Atticus "too proud to fight, you ni****-loven ba*****. Bob Ewell is about the only person who criticized Atticus to his face. All the citizens of Maycomb city criticized Atticus either behind his back, or through his children. They criticized him for mainly one reason, and that reason is his choice of respecting Tom Robinson. Some of the ways he is criticized through his children was when Scout was at aunt Alexandria's house and her and Francis her in the yard and Francis calls Scouts dad a "ni**** lover". After he calls him that Scout beats him up.

As I am reading the story, I am Characterizing Atticus in two different ways. First, Atticus is a good father. One reason that he is a good father is that he is flexible and open minded. For example, most parents do not let their children run around all day without supervision. According to Mrs. Dubose, “It was heartbreaking the way…

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” This quote, made by John Wooden, accurately describes what parents in our society would want to tell their children from a young age; the age at which a child’s mind can still be influenced. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee is trying to convey that parental discipline and support in a child’s life is crucial to a child’s identity. Atticus, teaches his children: Jem and Scout, valuable character traits throughout the novel which aid them with their personality development. The most predominant traits which he establishes are courage, empathy and integrity.…

Atticus, in contrast to many other characters in the novel, does not accept the institutionalized racism that is entrenched into Maycombian society. Instead, he fights racial prejudice because he views it as fundamentally flawed and stemming from a lack of empathy and understanding for those outside one’s social group. Furthermore, Atticus’ emotional investment in Tom Robinson’s case shows the personal level on which racism affects him. When discussing with Scout why he was defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explained, “… every lawyer gets a case at least once in his life that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.”…

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, there are many different themes depicted such as hypocrisy, prejudice, courage, coming of age/loss of innocence, justice, femininity, but racism is illustrated more heavily. Living in maycomb, racism is allowed; if you were not racist towards the blacks then you would be criticized by being called names such as “nigger-lover”. Atticus ignored the rest of the people in Maycomb and went out of his way to support a black man known as Tom Robinson, who was accused of rape. Racism is the key theme in the novel.…
