Optometry Reflection Paper

Vision is my inspiration. I wanted to understand how vision affects perspective and allows for every person to be unique, to mold their own personality, and to have an individual outlook on life. It is what led me to pursue optometry. The more I learned about optometry the more I came to appreciate the profession and its goal in improving patients’ vision. Now, most people take this to mean that an optometrists sole job is prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. Optometry does not stop there. From my experience, optometry is not an independent but a collaborative healthcare profession because the eye does not work alone but in conjunction with the brain and the rest of the body. The reason I have chosen optometry is because it promises opportunity for me to be an influential character by helping people …show more content…
A unique experience, I was able to recognize the hard work and commitment these students had devoted to optometry. In the short time that we were together, it was an invaluable experience to be able to talk to the students firsthand about their time in optometry school. After interacting with them, I can wholeheartedly say that I share their passion and zeal for thisprofession. Shadowing an optometrist is wholly different than shadowing an intern, a fact I learned when I began shadowing Dr. Asma Alizai, a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Dr. Alizai is a candid example of why I want to be an optometrist. She loves her job because she gets to see all aspects of eyecare and help patients by achieving their best vision possible. The one thing that stood out to me when I observed Dr. Alizai’s work was that she educated the patient every single time. She never made the patient feel nervous or insecure. She used models and visuals to help the patient understand rather than throwing medical jargon at them. That’s the kind of doctor I aspire to

I obtained insight from physicians about their experiences and specialties. I also had the opportunity to listen to patients’ stories and concerns. I learned that medicine is not merely about applying medical knowledge to treat others, but also about the quality of interaction that physicians forge with their patients. Furthermore, this experience helped me explore the daily lives of physicians and the challenges they face.…

My most recent medical experience was shadowing at an internal medicine office in my hometown in the summer before my junior year. Due to my dream of becoming a pediatrician, I originally tried to shadow at some pediatric offices but was denied to privacy concerns of parents. I decided to turn to internal medicine next since it is a similar field and environment. I shadowed both a physician and his nurse. I observed the physician and nurse, took notes, and participated in patient care, which was my favorite thing to do.…

This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. Each and every one of my goals were met through my time there.…

I have been asked to create a reflective account on an incident within my HNC work placement where I have had to overcome communication barriers with a patient. My reflection will be structured using Driscoll’s cycle, known as Driscoll (1994) Model of reflection. According to Driscolls cycle there are three processes in which should be used when reflecting on an incident or in general practice. These are what (returning to the situation), so what (understanding the context) and now what (modifying future outcomes). (Driscoll J. (2007)).…

High School, especially my Junior year, has been academically challenging and showing me what I am capable of doing. The most challenging course I have taken is AP Chemistry, because of the difficult lessons that I needed to learn. My class, along with my teacher were great, but many materials were required for me to learn and know in preparation for the AP exam. Overall it was a little overwhelming, but when it was time to take the exam, I knew many of the answers to questions I would have never thought I could answer in the beginning of the year. The 2016-2017 year has taught me to realize my strengths, but also my weaknesses.…

While some pursue medicine for the paycheck, prestige, or simply to carry on the family business, my desire for pursuing a career in medicine has been driven by another motive entirely. The odds were one out of 15,000 and I was chosen — I was diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) at the age of eight. CAH is a genetic disorder that affects the general health, growth, and development of the body. Not only does this condition involve the taking of daily medication for the rest of my life, I am also left with a compromised immune system and chronic fatigue. Despite such a grim prognosis, I found that my CAH was a blessing in disguise.…

The first skill that was used to engage my client was using an open ended question at the beginning of my interview. According to Hohman (2002), “open-ended questions are those that have a variety of possible answers and do not limit the client” (p.20) using this strategy allows the client to explore his own thoughts and it encourages the client to do most of the talking. I started my conversation with my client by asking a simple open question for example “how was his day going ?” later I saw myself asking deeper questions such as “You mention that your brother is an alcoholic, how is your relationship with your brother?” this allowed me to listen to my client story in his own words and to keep the interviewing flowing.…

The light extinction method was developed based on the works of Piere Bouger, August Beer, and Johann Heinrich Lambert (1760). Bouger observed for the first time that the light intensity of a candle decreases when it passes trough a transparent medium and appointed the length and the medium property as the main parameter to explain the light extinction. The correlation of absorbance and light path was proposed by Lambert. Finally, Beer concluded that absorbance is also proportional to the concentration. Nowadays, the laser extinction measurement is a suitable tool to reliably measure the soot concentration.…

My nine week placement at my CPO, Jacobsen Holdings was a great experience. As a student coming to work in a corporate environment, I felt uncomfortable in the beginning to ‘fit-in’ in this workplace. I only had theoretical knowledge that I learned from AUT but no practical marketing experience. In terms of the task that was given to me, I felt uneasy and worried that I would not be able to identify the issues and making recommendations based on doing market research because not only I was not familiar with the flooring industry, but it is also the industry I did not imagine myself working.…
