How To Write In High School

Improved Essays
My fellow peers, with the start of college never being more imminent than it is today, we must prep for the rigor of the classes, especially writing classes we will take at San Jose State University. Writing classes in high school are entirely different from writing classes in college, and some students may need to adjust to the new system. To be a writer in college means to be able to understand the works presented to you. In college, we will be exposed to new literary works of art, some even prevailing from ancient times, so we will need to be able to have the tools needed to decipher these literary works.

In the article “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay”, Foley , argues that the five-paragraph formula discourages students from discovering new ideas, and also prevents them from thinking creatively. The five-paragraph formula continues to be taught in high schools is because of teacher survival. According to the author the five-paragraph formula distorts the mindset of the students as well as counters basic goals of writing. Foley argues that "as soon as students meet their quota of three body paragraph, they are free to stop thinking about their topic." Because the formula of the five-paragraph essay indicates to students that they need only to develop three points that support a thesis, neglecting the connecting relationships between these…

When I was in high school, English class require us to write in five-paragraph formula that must had an introduction, three body paragraph, and a conclusion. I thought it is easier if I just follow the requirement and I can easily finish an essay it seems easy, but it takes me a lots of time to pick only three ideas to put into my papers. And sometimes is the opposite situation, I don’t have three ideas to put into my essay, so I need to make up ideas or use other ideas than I don’t even know, but I still have to use it to fulfill the requirement. So all I do when I’m writing a five-paragraph essay is only focus on the structure, how to fulfill the requirement, not on what I want to express in my papers. But after reading the article, author shows me how the five paragraph essay is useless and is not helping students to explore new information, so we just write what we know.…

As a student of the College in the Schools program, the class WRIT 1301 has provided me the opportunity to improve my writing and prepare me more effectively for college. During this semester course I worked with peers to improve not only my own writing, but also improved my analysis of peer works of similar structure. My first paper, a narrative titled Confessions of A Living Sin, was arguably the easiest piece to create, while simultaneously being the most difficult to write. Narrative pieces push writers to write of moments that are strong in emotion, and often times leave the writer vulnerable to whom is reading their work. For me, my vulnerability was discussing the ostracism I faced as a queer and transgender person in a conservative…

This should not always be used as you improve as a writer, you should also redevelop your procedure for writing. “What critics of the five-paragraph model should be objecting to is not that it is a formula, but that it is a weak formula” (Birkenstein & Graft 1). This quote separates different types of methodologies and demonstrates not all formulas are impractical but, there are more advantageous methods for different situations. As a high school student, I was never a particularly strong writer, I often lacked direction and the poetic language in my works. However, what the five paragraph essay did for me what guide me as a beginner to able to write my idea in an organized manner.…

"Dumdiddleydumdum, dumdum" is the riff that has inspired multiple songs and many artists. In "Liberating the Students Voice" Mark Holding explains to his students how this applies to college essays. They all must follow a set of rules but in the end, they are all completely different. This seemed very interesting to me since I have never seen it in that way. For instance, The Who and Bow Wow Wow are both from complete two different music genres but they somehow found a way to use the same riff that Bo Diddley created in 1955.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

My English professor made me write a minimum of five pages for an essay and I never wrote over three pages since high school. This course was a challenge for me, but it also taught me the value to writing. The more papers I wrote in college made my views change on writing. Writing became a secondary voice for me, it wasn’t difficult for me to write about what I knew or either what was near and dear to my heart. Although I respect writing, it is still something that I still struggle with till this day.…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…
