Tuesdays With Morrie
1. One of the significant lessons Morrie had taught Mitch during one of the annual Tuesday lessons was spent discussing money, and the negative impact it has on ones personality. As Morrie had said to Mitch during this lesson “ We put our values in the wrong things. And it leads to very disillusioned lives” (Albom 123-124). I believe that this means that some people get all caught up in having the most money or the nicest things or gadgets and forget what their values are really about. And essentially become brainwashed. All of this is backed up by this statement from Morrie “… Do you know how they brainwash people? They repeat something over and over. And that’s what we do in this country. Owning things is good. More money is good. More property is good. More commercialism is good. More is good. More is good. We repeat it --- and have it repeated to us--- over and over again until nobody bothers to think otherwise.” ( Albom 124) . I believe, …show more content…
The seasonal symbolism that is evidenced through the novel of Morrie’s progressing decay. “Finally, on a hot humid day in August” (Albom 7). It was during late spring when Morrie had begun to have issues with his walking. But, it wasn’t until later that summer when he was diagnosed with ALS. Which is also the seasonal beginning of new life such as new flowers blooming or the trees growing their leaves back. As the time goes by Morrie’s health goes downhill. The next season is fall and is all about the leaves changing color and then falling off, and this is where Morrie starts to lose his dependency and he can no longer lift his arms above his head. As time goes by we enter winter, winter is the season of death, where everything is lifeless and stark cold; the flowers have died and all the trees have lost their leaves.
