Charlie’s ability to push aside fear for the sake of his happiness and the happiness of others has helped him overcome the year. This also refers to new beginnings for Charlie after his realization of a negative experience which happened to him. Charlie’s attitude towards the new school year is positive, since he is “not that afraid.” Charlie is no longer afraid because before entering high school, Charlie was in a bad place mentally, however now that he has found happiness, from his courageous acts, he no longer is afraid. “[He’s] not sure if [he] will have the time to write any more letters” because he has learned to stop analyzing everything through thought, but rather to live the events in his life. This meaning that Charlie will be “trying to participate” because he has found happiness from taking part in experiences, such as going to his first party and going through the tunnel with his friends.
