The lottery is a heinous event that has taken place as long as many villagers could remember. The reason it still takes place is because the villages crops are believed to be dependent on it. Though many villages do not practice it any more. Some villagers fell that they are “pack of crazy fools” because they are playing with fate. The villages in the particular area depend on corn crop. If the lottery is not happening there is no offering to promise that the corn will come. There is also the fact that the village power runs the lottery. Some of the most powerful people in the village such as Mr. Summer and Mr. Grave run the lottery. Since they have such social influence it creates a greater acceptance of the lottery. When a villager Mr. Adams does speak out against the lottery it is shot down by irrational reason claiming “Nothing but trouble in that” (p,413). Indicating that the though the lottery causes one person to be murdered that murder not happening is even worse. The lottery is still happening in the village because it is seen as a survival, influence and a necessary
