In The Road to Character, Brooks showcases 10 people that we all know, whether that is past presidents, or CEO’s of companies and tells us the background on them and how they grew their character. Many people are able to relate to him, and see that even the top people who have luxury lives can keep good morals and integrity. Many of us are unaware though, that we aren't truly happy. His use of eulogy virtues vs. resume virtues makes us think about our everyday life and job. Eulogy virtues are who you are as a person, whether that is loving, dependable, or bold; it’s the deeper you. Resume virtues are the skills you bring to work, our society teaches young kids that success is everything but we forget to teach the qualities you should have as a person “students are taught to be self-sacrificial and self forgetting, to put the good of society above the good of their ego. But when they graduate they are told to look out for themselves, to settle down into marriage and, perhaps, career” (Brooks). Brooks, doesn't just tell us about character, he shows us what it truly mean to be a better person, he says what everyone needs to hear and this is what makes it a New York Times
