When I first selected The Nightmarys by Dan Poblocki from the horror section in the media center, my immediate reaction was, “Oh great, another tacky story about creepy girls that kill people while they sleep that will scare you even though it’s kind of stupid, have fun going to sleep tonight, Charlie!” I soon, however, realized that my first assumption was wrong; The Nightmarys, although being slightly difficult to follow, is actually a well-written, meaningful book. It is a little scary the first time you read it, who wouldn’t be scared by demon corpses, mysterious villains, and all the main character’s fears coming to life, but after you read the book a second time, you start to recognize the key elements all exceptional horror stories have.

You can always find a little touch of realism that is essential in any exceptional horror story, without it there would be no thrill factor, nothing to keep readers up at night wondering if the events in the book could happen to them. He has the right mix of scary events, like corpses rising from the dead or children of gods sucking away a person’s life, and realistic events, like accidentally choosing someone as your partner for a project or getting into a fight with your best friend. This not only makes the experience better for the reader but also gives Poblocki’s writing a mature manner. His writing also has the word choice of a horror story, guiding the reader’s imagination while still giving them room to imagine all of the gruesome details themselves using words such as “gore” and “disgusting”. Poblocki also uses several similes, which can often be found in horror stories, to bring his demonic creations to life in full mentality, like when he writes “The curtain was torn down, fluttering like a magician’s cape to the
