How To Write An Essay On The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls

The Glass Castle is a heartbreaking yet inspirational memoir written by Jeannette Walls. The book details the early years of her hectic life, from the western United States to Welch, West Virginia. Her memoir provokes disbelief and outrage, but all the stories within it actually happened. The book opens up with her first memory of being severely burned while cooking hot dogs at the age of three. The stories only get stranger from there. She was stashed in the back of a U-Haul, left to scavenge for her own food, and sexually assaulted on more than one occasion. Despite a drunken father and a not quite right mother, Walls somehow survived the trials. One of the struggles she had to go through was moving, or skedaddling as her family called it. Her father’s run ins with the law left them constantly moving from place to place to escape trouble and find work. Jeannette did not always go to school, but when she did, it was trying for her to change schools so often. I loved it and was good at it, too. I never fit the norm of girls not being good at math- until sixth grade. The science and social studies teachers paled in comparison to the abhorrent Mrs. B. She perfectly fit the description of the old, snippy, brutal teacher portrayed in movies. It was clear to see that she hated kids and hated her job. I am not just griping and complaining because I did not like her as a person; she ranks right up there as one of the worst teachers ever. As simple as the curriculum should have been, she could not explain anything to save her soul. I ended up having to get a tutor from the University of Findlay to pass the class. During my sessions at Panera with my tutor, she would repeatedly find errors in Mrs. B’s teaching. So, I was stuck for a whole year with three terrible, horrible, no good, very bad
