How To Write An Essay On Beowulf Book Vs Movie

For the most part the movie of Beowulf portrayed his character as they did in the epic, but not for the best. The epic poem of Beowulf gave us this image for this brave, boastful hero. As for Beowulf’s movie, not so much. Most of his characteristics differences in the book versus the movie are minor, unlike the plot. The differences seen in the portrayal of his character are that Beowulf is not as loyal to his men or family, he is not as honest, and he seems more independent in the movie. In the epic it was written that in the battle of Beowulf and Grendel that only let one of his men die, but in the movie several men died during the battle as they were trying to use weapons against him. Then in the movie he does not tell his men, the ones that have his back in all his battles, the truth about Grendel’s mom. Also in the text Beowulf returns back to his people, he goes home to his family then later becomes the king of the Geats. Beowulf being the king of the Geats was not the case in the movie. In the movie he stays with the Danes and becomes their king, not his people’s king.
Another major difference between Beowulf’s character in the movie versus the book is his integrity. In the text Beowulf is this hero who tries to stay true to his words, he might be a little bombastic, but for the most part he is honest. The …show more content…
The differences in the portrayal of Beowulf’s character is that he is not as loyal to his men or family, his mortality is not the same, and his independence is varied throughout in the movie. Beowulf is also shown more selfish in the film, he chases glory in both, but in the movie he was shown only thinking of himself. Now it can be argued that his selfishness if shown in both, but the movie portrayed him as a liar to claim his glory over Grendel which comes back to get him later.
