Rising Junior Summer Reading List Bad Boy – Dream Jordan Hitting the Brakes or the Accelerator
Protagonists in many novels have had people, objects, or events that have slowed or accelerated their thinking or behavior. The slowness or acceleration of ones thinking or behavior could be a positive or a negative or even both at times, this could be seen in Dream Jordan’s novel, Bad Boy. The protagonist of this novel, Kate, came in contact with many people, objects, and events that both slowed and accelerated her thinking and behavior. The forces that slowed Kate, most of the time, were a positive, often relaxing her or making her feel safe and loved. The accelerated forces in her life were mostly negative bringing her hurt and sadness. Kate was having a hard time in the shelter she was living in before the Johnsons took her into their home. The girls in the shelter always picked on her, this caused Kate to build “walls” and become secluded. Kate no longer had to keep these walls up when the Johnsons took her in. The Johnson home was a positive influence on Kate. Kate now felt safe and wanted. Kate was also now in a better environment, moving from Bed-Stuy into Ocean Parkway, this would stop her from getting in trouble around the neighborhood. Kate’s social worker, Tisha, was also a force in her life that slowed her thinking and behavior in a positive way. Tisha had a role in Kate’s life sort of like a guide or a guardian. Tisha gave Kate a sense of warmth and love. She also ensured Kate’s safety by making sure her caretakers treated her great. Tisha constantly helped Kate cope with her unloving and unforgiving past. Spending time with Tisha made Kate think that she was “strong” and a
