One of the topics that was talked about at the museum was of the tonols the Chumash rode on for catching fish and for other things. The Chumash used the tomols to paddle to the Channel Islands through long journeys. They used redwood to assemble the boats but once they ran out of the redwood they had to use whatever wood they could find and use. In order for the Chumash to connect the wood together they need to pierce some holes into the platforms so that they could stay together. Then they would add tar so that the boat would be sealed of any holes and that water couldn't get into the boat.…

Prior to reading this book, I believed the title Unbroken only signified the tragic war aspect of the story, however, it was layered with many aspects of Louie’s life. I thought this indicated war could not break him, regardless of the horrendous events he went through. To be fair, this is one of the meanings, but I am convinced there are multiple other implications sprinkled within. When Louie was announced missing-in-action, everyone was worried and concerned, specifically his family. His loved ones were constantly awaiting a message of reassurance Louie had been found.…

While few written records were left behind by the Indo-Europeans for historians to work with, recent archeological discoveries have uncovered a wealth of information about the development of Viking civilization. With the expansion of archeological research on land and water, researchers have gained an even more valuable insight into the Viking’s development and explorations. After reading Gwyn Jones’s narrative, “A History of the Vikings”, I found the Viking culture and level of sophistication rather fascinating in regards to their influence on the world. The history of the Viking civilization lasted less than three hundred years; however, during that time they traveled everywhere from Persia to Central Asia and even the shores of North America.…

What I gained from family gatherings was the importance of family unity and strength for family. My parents were very Afrocentric, my father would go to “Sankofa” meetings which I never understood the significance at that time, but now aware of that Sankofa symbolizes taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge.…
With such technological improvements, the Vikings began to make more and more ocean voyages, as their ships were more seaworthy. However, in order to sail in ocean waters, the Vikings needed to develop methods of relatively precise navigation. Most commonly, a ship’s pilot drew on traditional knowledge to guide the ship’s path. Essentially, the Vikings simply used prior familiarity with tides, sailing times, and landmarks in order to route courses. An example of this would be scholars contend that the sighting of a whale allowed the Vikings to determine the direction of a ship.…
