The people of Philadelphia have faced many dangers, including the risk of disease, starvation, robbery, and assault. Matilda had her share of dramatic experiences in her time, but in my opinion, she had been hit from all sides of life’s trenches all in one day. The day her grandfather died. That day included robbery, assault, starvation, and risk of disease. That day, they barely had any food, they were robbed, Matilda was abused, and her grandfather was sick and eventually died from the fever. On this very morning, Matilda was staying strong and taking care of her grandfather, she fed them potatoes, cherries, coffee beans and they drank water, it was not much to survive on. Matilda started to take over the abandoned coffee house after being separated from her mother. …show more content…
along with bravery, persistence kindness, care, strength, and love. Without those qualities she wouldn't be here without those qualities she wouldn't be who she is now.Think about it, if she wasn't strong she wouldn't have pushed through the fever, if she wasn't brave and persistent, caring, her grandfather would have died way sooner. Those qualities are what helped her get through those moments. Some might say that her qualities are bad and if she didn't have those qualities things would be better and grandfather wouldn't have been with her to get sick and die, if only Matilda listened more. But in reality that's a lie there's nothing she could have done and nothing would have changed because if grandfather stayed he would have gotten sick by mother and he would have died sooner because Eliza can not take care of the both of them. In conclusion Matilda has faced many traumas in her life but this one was big and without her having a good person's qualities she wouldn't be there, because her qualities are what helped her

In this case, Harriet is stuck between a dilemma of choosing who to save and she chooses to save the individual that is inherently more valuable. This paper supports Harriet’s decision by using Kantian ethics such as Kant’s theory on moral praise, Kant’s theory on imperfect duties, and finally by Kant’s formulation analysis of a categorical imperative. I will use Kantian ethics to support why Harriet deserves moral praise. After supporting why Harriet deserves moral praise I will briefly discuss the arguments against why Harriet does not deserve moral praise under Kantian ethics.…

The film Law and Disorder in Philadelphia exemplified high violence and crimes around the streets and in the neighborhood in Philadelphia. A theory for the high crime rate in Philadelphia could be from the result of distrust between the criminal justice system and the civilians. Since the destitute Philadelphia streets established itself to be a common placed for the drug trades, local police officers routinely encounter high rates of criminal activities and the local people strongly developed and shared some animosity toward the police officers. For those who live in these neighborhoods that persist in an impoverished state, its environment and its culture create many kind of strains which build greater stress and persistent social problems…

Arturo was bullied and almost forced to change his ways to, in some ways, feel better about himself. “Sometimes I feel trapped, trapped in a school that’s like an insane asylum, a trapped rat in this city that’s a maze-- no matter how long and far you walk, you always end up in the same place, at least it all looks the same: old apartment buildings with too many people, squeezed in, bars with sad-looking people staring into their cups, and stores so bright with lights, that they hurt my eyes.” (Cofer pg 314)…

I feel that she says this in a way that there is no possible way for them to every be together again and that he will never be her father again. The second part of the quote that stand out to me is when Matilda talks about how her father “place his hands on his hips to turn himself into a teapot”. In Matilda’s world, a teapot in a white thing, a very separate thing from her as she is black and that with this transformation she loses her father because there is the great chasm between black and white. In this quote, I feel that she almost talks about her father as if he died since he no longer is her father to her but a “white man”. That is the first time that we see Matilda deal with the negative ramifications of…

This characterisation of Matilda suggests that she possesses darker traits than the tragic Faustus, as she is called a ‘subordinate but crafty spirit’ who is aware of the horrific fate that awaits Ambrosio (p.337). Faustus, however, suffers from a very human error, as he is enticed by the demon Mephistopheles, and ultimately laments his failure in witnessing the ‘seat of God, throne of the blessed, the kingdom of joy’ (5.2.47). Matilda, however, is the demon that entices Ambrosio to fragmentally soil his soul, as he deteriorates to the point where he is persuaded to summon a demon and to become a ‘superior Being’ (p.329). Upon this summoning,…
