Bethany’s human qualities such as hope and perseverance were most influential in shaping the way she lived and influenced others of her time. “Once a girl (I never got her name) came up and told me that she had had cancer. When she saw my story it made her realize that she didn’t need to give up; it made her realize that she didn’t need to give up; it made her want to fight hard too” (141). Bethany inspired the girl to never give up. She was so moved by Bethany that she even believes that it was because of her that she is cancer free. The two most important lessons any other young person or I might learn from the way Bethany lived are to never give up and always look on the bright side of your situation. She taught me to never give up because even though the odds were stacked against her, Bethany didn’t quit surfing. "There's no such thing as a handicap - it's all in your head" (183). She made me as well as other young people that anything is possible! She made people believe that anything is possible because she competed on the United States surf team with only one arm, and other professional surfing competitions. She believed that she could use her story to inspire other people. She always made sure to stay positive.
