How To Write An Argumentative Research Paper

In high school, I wrote economic research papers for competitions and won trophies at a state level. I figured I had some sort of background in writing research papers because I’d already done it for the past two years of my life, and had to learn about appeals in Introduction to Public Speaking last semester. However, when I started writing argumentative research papers in English Composition II, it was extremely difficult. I felt like I wasn’t doing my topics justice until I truly researched and knew what I was talking about. I worked on my tone, my ability to use appeals, and how to avoid fallacies. I flipped between general sexism, why feminism is seen as unnecessary, intimidating or vulgar, and the effects of negative body image before I decided upon sexism against women in influential positions. Unfortunately, my thesis statement couldn’t just be a statement, it had to be something I could prove. I decided to explore the idea of if sexism for powerful women existed because they already defeated the barriers in front of them. My thesis ended up being that despite sexism being present in every kind of woman’s life, it is taken to a deeper, more dangerous level when put onto women who can change the way we think. Just because some women made these drastic strides in male dominated fields, doesn’t mean they don’t feel prejudice and discrimination; in all honesty, women in the public eye constantly see sexism more intensely than an average woman because they can be called out on their ideas and blacklisted if the majority doesn’t agree.
