Medicine, insect control, fertilizers and agricultural uses all have an advantage when it comes to nuclear power, but the most well known use is electricity. Gaining energy from nuclear power plants provides electricity for about 20% of the United States population, however, the negatives of this process greatly outweigh the positives. The fission of uranium atoms is done in a nuclear power plant. These plants or stations contain the reactor, which is where the breakdown happens, and a cooling tower, which is used to stop the already used uranium rods from being radioactive. Nuclear energy was used in order to reduce the amount of fossil fuels being consumed already. Fossil fuels, such as coal or gas, are derived from the past remains of organisms. When these are used for energy, greenhouse gases are creating and go into the Earth’s atmosphere. Some greenhouses gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor and methane are already present naturally and do not cause any harm. However, an excessive amount does not allow the Earth to cool down fast enough and the temperature rises. Uranium is still found naturally in rocks and seawater, but atom fission does not create any harm to the atmosphere, so this process seemed like a great idea. Although there may be more access to uranium than standard fossil fuels, uranium is still an non-renewable resource. Non-renewable means that it cannot be naturally replenished by Earth at the same rate that humans are consuming it. Kazakhstan, a country in central Asia, currently has the most access to uranium right now, with about 23,000 metric tonnes, which is roughly equivalent to 50 million pounds (Nuclear Power).
