The animals on the exterior looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man once more; but already it was incomprehensible to state which was which. This takes place after the pigs invite the humans to visit Animal Farm. The humans inspect Animal Farm and are impressed with the progress that the farm has made without any humans. The other animals watch as the pigs and humans act gather together. They talk together, laugh together, play cards together, and fight the same. They have the realization that pigs have turned into humans in the sense of their action. The pigs have turned into their cruel previous masters and are horrified at what they see. The humans treated the animals poorly so the animals rebelled against them and gained their freedom. But once the pigs had the power they abused it and the animals, showing how they are really no different from the humans. They are crucial to the story because it shows how the whole story is one big circle; a cruel leader, freedom, a new cruel leader. It also shows the evolution of the pigs. How they went from creating freedom to taking it away. Or maybe it shows that was their plan all along? Maybe this shows how the pigs were power hungry and used the revolution as an excuse to gain power. Either way, this last line of the story sparks many feelings within the reader and shows the evolution of the pigs’ character as the reader realizes just how horrible the pigs have become after their turn with
