Alligators are such great animals, and are often mistaken with Crocodiles but they are two totally different animals. Alligators have wide, flat and rounded snouts. Their food consists of fish, frogs, snakes, turtles, birds, and other mammals. They’ve even eaten deer and other cattle as well. They are also known to attack humans because they are territorial and the females protect their babies. They can survive a very wide range of temperatures, but are mostly found in more warm regions. They’re are actually only two types of alligators, the American Alligator and the Chinese Alligator. The American Alligator can grow up to 19 feet and could weigh up to 600 pounds. Unlike the American Alligator, the Chinese Alligator only can grow up to 5 feet and are very timid and are not a big threat on humans.
Alligators breeding season mostly occurs in the spring. Since alligators are reptiles and not mammals they lay eggs. They can lay from 30 to 60 eggs and the female takes tremendous care for the eggs. The eggs usually hatch in about 60 days, and during those days the mother puts mud on them and makes sure they get heated by the sun and stand guard for them until they hatch. They are hunted because of their skin which is used in many different clothing which was a very popular style for a long time. They are also hunted for their meat and sometimes just as trophies. The baby alligators are also hunter so people could have alligators as pets. Then in 1967 the Alligator was declared as an endangered species, which means people were not allowed to hunt them or hurt them in anyway. This really helped alligators get back to what they once were. Now there is a lot of alligators once again and they are no longer endangered. Sadly they are still hunted to today, but they are still many alligators and many people trying to help
