I am writing to inform you that I have strengthened my understanding of the use and incorporation of knowledge and ideas. My skills in writing have become significantly stronger ever since we started this semester back in January. Before I took Writing in the Sciences with you as my instructor, incorporating knowledge and ideas has became a lot easier for me to accomplish when writing. I never realized how inadequate I was at incorporating my ideas into my writing. One activity that helped me improve the most was the group research project. At first, trying to write the research proposal was overwhelming and complicated. Trying to incorporate my ideas on the topic into the proposal was a challenge because we were using scholarly articles from …show more content…
The best example would be this letter I am writing to you. To be completely honest, I did not remember how to write a letter in proper format even after taking English 120. I now understand the simplicity of writing a letter (which is a genre). Another genre that I learned about this semester is a memo. I did not previously know that a memo had a specific format that needs to be followed. I am very glad that I know that now, it would have been humiliating if I were to send a memo to my boss in an unprofessional manner. Before I took this upper level writing class, I did not truly understand the meaning of the word genre. I thought it was just a simple description such as style of music like rock, pop, hip-hop, jazz etc. Instead a genre can be defined as type of writing with distinguishable characteristics. I have also learned which type of genre to use in certain situations. An example is when communicating with a fellow classmate. I would most likely send them an email instead of sending them a letter because it seems more appropriate for that situation. A very simple yet important genre was the “New Employee” informative writing. This assignment demonstrated my ability to communicate to you effectively about someone else. I interviewed a classmate (Christina) and wrote a few things down that she told me. I then wrote a ¾ page paper introducing Christina to a

Every piece of writing has its own genre. The purpose, audience, topic, and other factors all contribute to which conventions the author will use in order to convey the genre or message. For example, if the author is trying to persuade his audience to believe in let’s say, his religion, he might use a personal experience that changed his life to explain why they should consider believing in his religion. In Jonathan Foer’s personal essay ‘Against Meat’, he uses personal anecdotes and a nostalgic and positive tone to reach his audience. While in Michael Pollan’s list/argument ‘Six Food Rules’, he uses facts, common sense, and tips to convey his message.…

“Genres have the power to help or hurt human interactions, to ease communication or to deceive, to enable someone to speak or to discourage someone from saying something different” (Kerry Dirk). The word “genre” has a prototypical definition of “category”, one needs to analyze the definition on a deeper level to understand that “genre” means more than just “category”. It is to an extent a “[tool] to help people to get things done”, as described in the article “Navigating Genres” by Kerry Dirk. The literal definition of genre is a category of artistic compositions, in literature, characterized by similarities in form, content or context, but what makes one genre unique from another is its writing elements such as rhetorical devices, targeted…

These genres deviated from the boring realities of our world. While I did take an interest in reading, the books that my teachers gave me to read were boring, non-fiction, books with no pictures. The lack of readings I did began to have an effect on the way I wrote. It wasn’t until then my teacher decided to introduce to us book reports. We could read any book we wanted and then write we liked and disliked about the book, however it had to be on a level that was suited for us.…

A genre involving a discourse community is a written piece of material used as a further way to communicate, doing group activities or to invite newcomers to join their group. Swales uses the example of wedding invitations to describe a genre. For instance, a person who is getting married uses wedding invitations as a way to communicate and to spread the word about the wedding; thus making the wedding invitations the genre. 5.) In addition to owning genres, a discourse community has acquired some…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

He says that genres are not limited to written frames, rather any form of communication by which interaction occurs can be constituted as genre. This allowed me to form a framework about the direction of my extended writing project. Keeping in Bozeman’s definition of genres, I concluded that genres constitutes as any distinct and creative work used for meaningfully communicating our thoughts. Fitting Genre to Audience and Purpose (Rough Draft) When writing, it is important to know to whom you are talking to and what’s the purpose of your composition. Throughout this course, my classmates and I have worked on many assignments where the audience varied. Sometimes our assignments were for our professor and other times for the rest of the class. My take away from the genre change project was learning that there are many ways that you can present a topic and each has challenges and provides an opportunity for learning. I was surprised at how difficult it was to write a story at the reading level of an eight year old. I explored a variety of genres including the research paper, posters, power point and children’s books. I expect to be able to apply my understanding of each as I continue my education. When I have an assignment to present research or information to a group, I will reflect on the work that I saw and then apply the genre that would provide the most…
