A health related example would be the patient that is chronically readmitted to the hospital for COPD exacerbation on a frequent basis. The patient acknowledges taking their medication as prescribed and attending all follow-up appointments. However, the patient refuses to stop smoking. As healthcare providers we may find this very frustrating, but it is important to continue to educate the patient on the hazards of smoking and how it continues to affect their disease process. A work related example would be the inability to get nurses to volunteer for overtime to assist other floors of the hospital that may be understaffed. There are complaints that these nurses are not being team players. However, many of the nurses who have volunteered in the past have complained about being given the most difficult patients when they “float” to another floor.

This means that a nurse is called at home and told not to come in later in the week. This keeps the nurse from receiving overtime pay. They basically just worked a regular work week without the benefit of that extra day, when they are called off later in the week. Therefore, this has caused many nurses to refuse to do any overtime despite the need for help. This happens at the hospital where I work frequently. I believe it is due to the fact that we work under a transactional leadership environment. There is hardly ever any input allowed from the nurses as how this problem could be resolved. According to Yoder-Wise (2014), “The leader motivates the self-interest of the employee by offering external rewards that generate conformity with expectations” (p. 42).
