On March 29th, 1997, 39 men and women took their own lives in the belief that they would travel to a space ship hidden in space. The "Heaven's Gate" cult planted this belief in its members minds members, resulting in a mass suicide. The members of this cult took an anti-seizure medication, mixed with a spoonful of applesauce, and washed down with a glass of vodka. Additionally, they tied plastic grocery bags over their heads in order to induce abnormal breathing. Some authorities found those 39 dead bodies lying neatly in separate bunk beds, with their faces and torsos covered by a small square of purple cloth. Each one of its members carried a five-dollar bill and three quarters in their pockets, this was said to have been the interplanetary toll. A former member of the People’s Temple cult once said: “Don’t drink the Kool Aid”. You may not be familiar with this saying but this is in reference to the 1978 cult mass-suicide that took place in Jonestown, Guyana. Jim Jones, the leader of the group, convinced every single one of his followers to move to Jonestown. Later in the year he hosted a party for his followers where he then commanded his flock to commit a mass suicide by inducing a cup full of grape-flavored Kool-Aid which was laced with potassium cyanide, which is an extremely deadly chemical. In what is now commonly known as the “Jonestown Massacre", 913 of its members drank the Kool-Aid and peacefully died that very day within hours. But one lasting legacy of the Jonestown tragedy is the saying, “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid.” Today this has come to mean, "Never trust any group you find to be a little on the odd side." or "Whatever they tell you, never believe it too strongly". In conclusion a lesson we can all learn from this is; do not ever drink the Kool
