We have Ariah Hobdy at the Capital.
[Cut to Ariah standing in front of the Capital.]
Ariah: Yes, good evening.
The bill was proposed a year before Douglass’ bicentennial. Congress members plan to end the mystery of human trafficking and provide more tools to prevent it. Ken Morris, a descendant of Douglass, told NBC News, quote “The measure to end human trafficking should be a priority of the Trump Administration.”
The bill will be proposed to the Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 2. Back to you, Caroline.
{Back to Caroline.}
Caroline: Thank you, Ariah. …show more content…
If passed, the bill will provide education to students, who are most susceptible to human trafficking. 21 million people worldwide are victims of human trafficking, with 55% being women and children. But how has technology enabled the trade of humans? Austin Duplantis has the story.
[Cut to Austin.]
Austin: Thank you, Caroline.
You may have heard of the Dark Web. It’s a site found below the ‘surface’ of the world wide web that enables the selling of drugs, weapons, and most horrifying, people. The dark web truly is modern human trafficking, and it allows traffickers to remain almost completely anonymous.
Many departments have turned their attention to stopping the use of the deep web for illegal purposes.
DARPA, or the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, launched a program in 2015 called Memex that would create a large impact on the prevention of human trafficking.
Memex essentially uses a domain-specific search engine to catch signs of trafficking.
After the break, we visit DARPA and take you inside the operation.
