CHAPTER THREE
A Hot Knife through Butter
I slip through the glass like a hot knife through butter and I was back in Sirethiel. Although as I stood I thought it was strange, I hadn't been gone that long, but I don't even recognize the place. It was like I was on the surface of the moon. Maybe this wasn't the kingdom. Maybe I was someplace else, another ancient distant world, far away. I looked around and didn't see any trees, bushes, or water. The place was silent, cold and dark. As I walked I noticed that the soil was a gray powdery substance that was scattered with green rocks. I sat down on one of the larger rocks wondering if I had been tricked and a sickening panicky feeling flooded over me. Then gradually it dawned on me, there weren't

"It's only been a few months?" "No, no ... it's been at least a hundred years," he insisted and clicked his tiny wooden clogs together twice. "I know that time passed differently here. The last time that I was in the Kingdom time stood still. I'd be gone for days and it was as I had never left. But hundred years ... it can't be?" He nodded and his long white beard bobbed back and forth. "Oh sure it can. Haven't you looked around?" "Yes," I said slowly while he stepped outside in the moonlight and began to stir a large black pot on was set on a fire. I lay there for a moment, shivering and realized that I was being stabbed in the side with a rock. So I got up and slipped on my coat. "Well? Things have changed," he said, and I watched his brown eyes crinkle at the edges with worried. "I can see that, what happened?" I said staring at the yellow flames. He pushed his gray pointed hat back slightly and dished up two bowls of something out of the pot. Then he handed me one. "What is this?" "Yes, so," he said, "I'm curious why are back? I am sorry I didn't mean it that way. I really am glad to see you." "It's all right Cotton I understand. I'm back is to find the key to the lower realm of darkness so that I can save my Parents," I sighed nervously and began pacing back and forth. "Save your parents? Why? What happened to them?" I told him the whole story and at last he said, "Ah, I should know that he was involved. That dreadful goblin's behind every evil plot. Just look what he's done here! He's cast an enchantment over the Kingdom and now most of its dust. Well there nothing that can be done about it. So I guess we need to concentrate on saving your parents. If I'm understanding you correctly we need to locate the golden key and you'll exchange it for your parents?" "Yep that's what he wants," I replied. "First we have to track down Zander and he'll tell us where we can find the key." "You mean King Zander don't you?" "He's King now?" I said. "Oh yes long ago after you returned the jeweled scepter he ruled as King over
