Self-Reflection Paper
As a young child, I have always had the desire to help others. It was the issues that my family was dealing with that was the deciding factor for why I wanted Human Service/ Psychology to be my major in college. I experienced so much emotional abuse growing up, most of my family was addicted to drugs and were alcoholics during my youth. These behaviors ultimately led to me wanting and needing the affection and love that I desired from my family in all the wrong places such as sex and men. Growing up I dated men that were very physically and emotionally abusive. I believe that people with the desire to grow and gain knowledge will have the power to change the circumstances of their lives. The traits that we assume from birth into adulthood largely has to do with the environment that we grow up in, the values that we are taught, and the relationships that we encounter from birth. It is my personal opinion that as people get older they are the ones that dictate the outcomes of their lives. You can have two people that grew up in the same house hold, with the same parents, and lived the same lifestyles but the difference in the two are the paths that they decided that they were going to take. Change is inevitable in every situation, however you have to retrain yourself new behaviors that will bring about that change. It is my belief that one has to want that change if they want to be successful with not letting their past become their future. People should amend the way they think and some of the behaviors so that are able to create new memories. I will use the Adlerian approach as my guide which interacting with my clients. The Adlerian approach teaches that humans are socially motivated and that their behavior is purposeful and directed toward a goal and it recognizes the importance of internal factors, such as perception of reality, values, beliefs, and
