The girls on my team had been polishing their volleyball skills since they were in elementary school, and I could hardly even pass a ball. During the second week of practice, I still recall the Varsity coach telling us that we had to think about whether we truly wanted to be on the team or not. I knew I wasn't any good. I knew that I'd sit the bench for most, if not all, of the season. Honestly, I almost walked out of the gym that day with no intention of coming back, but I didn't. Day after day, week after week, year after year, I have come back into the gym, and I have practiced. Because I’m a senior this year, I play on the varsity team, but I spent the vast majority of my time on the bench, taking stats on the girls who actually get to play. Do I wish I were playing? Of course. But understanding what is best for the team has helped me get through this season without becoming discouraged. Instead of trying to show off, I spend my days simply trying to better myself. I show up every day, and I give my all. In the end, I believe that I’m improving, and that’s what matters to me. I truly enjoy watching the other girls flourish, and I know that we can only grow together when we put our own wants aside and work as a team, for the
