Cholera
Imagine having to drink dirty, brown, and bitter water. Unfortunately, many people in poor areas have no other choice. These people often get cholera. The virus Vibrio cholerae can spread very easily amongst people that live in poorer areas without clean water. In the history of cholera they knew the symptoms but had yet to learn how to treat it. Throughout history, cholera has caused many problems for mankind. Thankfully, some people, like John Snow, have been intelligent enough to solve the problems the disease has caused. In 1849, Snow came up with a theory about the cause of cholera. His theory was confirmed five years later, in London, England. In 1954, a cholera outbreak was happening. The first major signs of cholera are severe and watery diarrhea and vomiting. Because of the loss of fluids, these two lead to another symptom, dehydration. Other signs of cholera would include cold and droopy skin, leg cramps, circulatory system failures, low blood pressure and shock, a term for when there is a lack of blood in someone’s head. Some symptoms such as a major organ failure or kidney failure occur in some cases, but not all. These symptoms normally appear in two or three days after consuming Vibrio cholerae. However, if the patient is untreated, death can occur in hours. Thankfully, because cholera is now easy to treat, very few people die of the disease. One of the most effective treatments is an IV. The first thing to do to a patient would be to reacquire important fluids. This can be done by simply eating foods like soup, but for the patient, that is more difficult than it sounds. Another treatment would be a shot. Shots that are made to cure cholera contain dead Vibrio cholerae bacteria. By performing any one of these treatments, a patient can quickly
