This is day one of my mentoring session with Madeline A. I am excited to be able to assist her with some survival methods for nursing school. She advised me that currently she is between a B and a C average. Her areas of improvement are changing answers on an exam, time management, critical thinking and test taking strategies. In our next session, we will discuss time management.

It is obvious that the predicted nursing shortage is now here. It was predicted that by 2018 there would be an increase in the demand for nurses by 22% (Cottingham, DiBartolo, Battistoni, & Brown, 2011, p. 250). This is now becoming a huge concern and nurses cannot afford to have retention problems. One study found that 35% of nurses that were not mentored left their positions (Fox, 2010, p. 311). A mentoring program could make a significant difference in the nurse turnover rate.…

These past few years, I have further refined my critical thinking skills when approaching nursing education and its processes while addressing the most critical issues, and increasing the number of students enrolled in a program. To bring this about, I had to prove myself, not only in my clinical acumen, but also in my verbal and written skills, team building ability and willingness to be an advocate for all students, prospective and current, as well as identifying and recruiting for nursing programs. What is more, these skills have increased my quantitative and statistical ability, skills that will prove invaluable in my doctoral research, not to mention the responsibility of educating nursing students. The students that will go forth and provide optimal care to the nation’s…

I would like to say I excelled in self-management, there were times when I would fail to meet with my personal project mentor weekly but I did always keep her updated with emails or talking about it in the little bits of time I would catch her and talk and walk. I also kept up with dates in my process journal and times; there was never a time I wrote in my physical process journal that I did not record the time and the date at which I was doing these tasks or completing that research. If I were to make a timeline of all the research I have completed from the beginning to the end of my personal project, I would be able to mark the information completely honestly because I did keep track of dates. The only aspect for self-management I will I had done better is the talking to my mentor.…

Nursing, from the perspective of a first-year nursing student, is a profession that is underestimated. Nurses are the backbone of all health care facilities; without them, quality of care would greatly decrease. Through the influence of maternal figures in my family, along with an inherent interest in health care and a strong desire to care for others, I was drawn to the profession of nursing. However, a nurse requires more than merely an interest and the desire to care for others. During my first few months as a nursing student, my understanding of nursing, or lack thereof has come to light.…
