How To Write A Reflective Essay On Clinical Experience

Decent Essays
Nursing school has been given me the opportunity to provide care to people that require health care. In these three years I have gained a lot of knowledge; however, it has been a roller coaster ride with its excitement and difficulties as well. What I really like about this semester is the preceprship. I find it really helpful and beneficial to me as a new nurse to be. During this preceptorship, I am gaining a lot of confidence on myself and I feel read for the real world of nursing. I am preceptoring in a med surge floor which was not what I wished for, yet I am so glad that I am preceting in this unit. This experience is giving me the opportunity to further develop my skills and build confidence on myself. The first day of the clinical was more an orientation to the unit and the …show more content…
I looked at the patient that were assigned to my preceptor and started to look a little bit more about their complains and the reason for seeking hospital care. The second day of clinical my preceptor had 4 patients and she gave me one patient to take care on my own. However, she was there while I passed the medication or if I had any questions for her in regards patient care. I listened to the nurses giving report at the beginning of the shift. Then I went into the patient’s room introduced myself and did a full assessment on the patient. I charted the assessment on the computer and them the preceptor went over with me on the areas that I missed or did mistakes. To prevent making mistakes in the future I took notes and wrote them down so I can refer to the notes if needed. What I really likes was that at the beginning of the shift and after we got report from the night shift nurse the preceptor went over the prioritization, which patient we will see first and the rationale behind that. I did not actually delegated any tasks to another PCA or UAP. However, I observed my preceptor on how she would

It was our first day of real clinical experience, and despite a semester of preparation, I was not ready. I wanted the healthcare aids to offer to help me as I was struggling, but I understand how busy they were. If I kept bugging them about the coughing issue I would have been another addition to their workload. Trish was in the same situation as me, appeared to be feeling similarly, and just wanted to feed her resident safely. She was hesitant to ask for help from the healthcare aids too, presumably because of how busy they…

I also was in charge of making sure all the rooms were filled with a patient for the doctor to see. I also had to write the patient's chief complaint in their charts, and perform EKG, urinalysis, and tympanograms. I also pulled charts at the end of the day so it would be ready for the next day. After every patient left, I would file his or her chart in the appropriate space. At the end of the day, I cleaned…

As a Registered Nurse, I begin my shift by accepting report from the previous nurse. I understand that I am orientating a new Licensed Practical Nurse who is almost complete with her orientation. I have three patients, and I am expecting a new admission from the Emergency Department, who presents with chest pain. My job is to delegate the appropriate patient or patients to a licensed practical nurse after I introduce myself and the LPN. It is very important for me to know how to prioritize the patient care.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

As a student it is imperative to follow the residents care plan and ensure the client is in the best care. This is also a policy at the Golden Manor. Although my preceptor was unaware what had happened, he could have possibly taken notice and that could have caused great embarrassment for myself. However, if I would have brought the issue to my preceptor I could have gained a valuable learning opportunity. Nursing literature suggests that, at times, opportunities for teaching and learning clinical skills are sometimes missed.…

Encourage them to speak with me with any of their concerns and I will also try to anticipate their needs. New graduates are recently out of school and can offer help and suggestions to make improvements as well. Nurses who are crossing the threshold from school to their first nursing job can offer insights and suggestions to future rookies that will make their “new nurse” experiences better (Kersey, 2012). I would possibly try and find another preceptor depending on the situation. As a nurse, it is imperative that you are with someone you feel you can ask questions to comfortably.…

Adult Health III Reflective Journal 3 This week in clinical I was on the Critical Care Unit. My patient was in for respiratory problems. I had to administer meds for two patients. On Tuesday, I did not pass 9 a.m. medications for either patient, and both patients were comfortable and did not require any PRN medication. I gathered information, evaluated priorities and waited to review my findings with my instructor. After meeting with my instructor I completed my assessments and delegated my team member to assist with cares. One of my patients was to be discharged later that day…

According to Anthony (2015), it can be difficult to address situations when a preceptee exhibits unsafe actions in nursing, especially when it comes to a nursing student. Have you ever had to deal with this type of situation? Did you talk to the student's nursing instructor or your nursing manager? I am sure you feel great when your preceptee learns from you and accells.…

I have been assessing almost every patient that has been assigned to my preceptor and me and been anticipating diagnostic studies they may need. I have been conducting focused patient assessments depending on their chief complaint. For example, the patient complains of chest pain I have been asking OLD CART, obtaining vitals, EKG, auscultating heart and lung sounds. I have also responded appropriately to worsening patient conditions such as raising the head of the bed when they are having trouble breathing and applying oxygen when their O2 sats start lowering. I have also…

I am writing to express my interest in the Clinical Internship at the Child Mind Institute, which I found listed on the Columbia University Center for Career Education Handshake platform. As a junior, majoring in Biochemistry with a concentration in Psychology, I believe the clinical internship is an ideal blend of my past academic, laboratory and extracurricular experiences. As an undergraduate research assistant at the Champagne Laboratory, which specializes in psychobiology, epigenetics and neuroscience, I’ve independently studied the gene expression and methylation profile of adult mice exposed to early-life maternal separation. In choosing the depression and anxiety target genes for my study, I’ve been exposed to a wealth of literature on anxiety and mood disorders. My experience studying the influence of nonoptimal early environments on the developing brain and later symptomatology of depression and anxiety has sparked an interest in pursuing a career in the molecular biology of psychiatric disorders.…

I feel extremely fortunate and lucky that I have had relatively little personal experience in the healthcare field. Most of my family, outside of grandparents that were in their 80s, has also been relatively healthy. I have not had cancer, broken a bone, gotten into an accident, or some other problem to bring me into a hospital, which would make it easy to say that I do not have a “illness narrative,” but the more I thought about this topic the more I realized how integral healthcare has been to me. While I have not had serious illnesses or treatments, I have had regular check-ups, gone to the doctor when I had a small problem, and been to specialists for my eyes and skin. Preventative medicine has been integral to my upbringing and culture, which could very well be the reason I have not had any serious illness in the past.…

I have never experienced therapy, but always had imagined how the process would be. I pictured a couch and a therapist on a fancy chair like in the movies, and I would just lay there and vent about my problems. Initially, I was very excited to see someone whom I can speak with and possibly help me resolve my issues, but that excitement did not last long. Anxiety kicked in as I got a phone call from the therapist, informing me that we would start next week. I started to become very nervous about the whole client-therapist relationship, for what if I did not connect with.…
