Although I had researched the medication my patient was taking the night before clinical, and knew that it was prescribed for urge-incontinence, I did not have in-depth understanding of how this anticholinergic worked before studying for this exam. Many of my patients this semester have also been on oral antidiabetics, which before this exam I had very little knowledge about.
After participating in several codes in the emergency department I worked in this summer, and now working in pre-op and PACU, I really enjoyed learning about atropine and other drugs that I have watched the administration of. I feel as though everything is coming full circle this semester. I am beginning to make connections between all that I have learned through hands on experiences, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and now pharmacology.
As with the first exam, I am once again reminded of the importance of concept-learning rather than memorization. Focusing on, and having an in-depth understanding of the modes of action of each classification is enabling me to develop the critical thinking skills I will need to be an effective and safe
