PERSONAL STATEMENT
As a child growing up through school I had many setbacks in my academics that I had no idea as to what path I was going down. I had entered my freshman year of college with an attitude that if I want to become someone I needed to change the way I looked at my academics. Starting out my college career I had no idea what I really wanted to be, as I was all over the place, first chemistry major and then a computer science major. I went on and tried both of the majors out thinking that’s exactly who I really wanted to be, but in fact I really pulled my academics to the minimal low and did not succeed in both. That is when I realized I needed a solid foundation in academics and needed to sit down with my parents and explain to them that all the pressure and force upon becoming a dentist, which they wanted me to become, was just not going to work out for me. I did not have the correct work ethic as I had failed both my chemistry classes during the Spring of 2012 and then going on to my computer science classes in the Fall of 2012. That

The year was 2014. I was a senior in high school, already I had committed to go to Colorado Mesa University, I had a track scholarship and I was going to major in Geology, ultimately wanting to go into petroleum engineering. The only thing was, I didn’t want to. I did not want to go be a geologist, I wanted to travel, to see the world! As cliché as it may have been, I dropped out, I worked for a period of time and sent myself on a trip to Europe to “find myself”.…

In 2010 I was a person who was unsure about all the aspects of my life. I felt as if life had no meaning to it. I was afraid of what the future held for me due to the fact that it never seemed to be clear to me. I had no education goals whatsoever, I was extremely unmotivated to succeed in life. I never valued anything that I had, that being the love my family and friends gave me and all the personal belongings that my parents provided me with.…

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

Careers, jobs, college, finishing high school, and other extra activities are all on my plate (and I know other students’ plates as well), and I am only a junior in high school. My mom is kind of shocked about how much pressure they put on high school students nowadays for what they what to go into and do in life. Last week friday, I went on a college visit to Cornerstone University. It is a great Christian university, but it overwhelmed me with all the different major and minor options I could choose from. Since about fifth grade, I started thinking about what I wanted to do after school.…

As an immigrant, I have lived a financially difficult life when my father gambled away our home, savings, and the life we had in Iowa and decided to leave us in Georgia. Overnight my mother was granted custody of my two sisters and I and became a single parent/head of household after more than 12 years of being a stay at home mom. With minimal English and no work experience, my mom initially worked for less than minimum wage jobs, food catering company during the day; where her income was based on how much production/food she completed for the day, cleaning corporate companies at night, and even cleaning people’s homes on the weekends to provide for the family. With the joys of having us in her life, she had to sacrifice everything including getting only a few hours of sleep every night and working multiple…

As a child, everything in the world seems so clearly black and white. It seems like everyone just naturally gets older, goes to college because they have to, and work wherever they and up. Then I myself got older and started to question: But why do I need to go to college? What’s so great about it?…

I kept going back to the thought that I was selling myself short. I began to ask myself, how can I encourage my future children to make the best out their opportunities if I don’t pursue a graduate degree? What type of role model do I want to be for my children? These were a powerful thoughts that I navigated alone. These thoughts became so persistent that it ignited the transition I am still immersed in today.…

Several challenges occurred during my college career. I worked throughout the majority of my education to pay for books and tuition. My parents helped with the costs of attending college as well as supporting me when my studies became difficult. The experience of being the first in my family to work towards a bachelors degree meant a lack of guidance and advice. I sought out the advice of an adviser who I have been working with for the past three years.…

As my senior year recently came closer to an end, it became more clear that I was more unsure than ever as to what I wanted to do in life. School was not something I enjoyed and the thought of furthering my education taking random classes without knowing what I wanted to do seemed depressing. I decided I would enroll in the community college near my home in Alabama and get started on some basic classes. About a month after graduating, I was talking to my mom and she asked me what I wanted to do for a career. Still depressed and feeling anxious about the subject, I told her I really just wanted to go to cosmetology school.…

The future is never clear, and my own was no exception. Thoughts of what I wanted to do with my life were always followed by uncertainty. During the entirety of my adolescence I always felt overwhelmed by my inability to decide my future, leading to a metastasizing panic in my inabilities to achieve success in any discipline. My transition from childhood fantasies to adult goals was anything but seamless and I often found myself lost, especially in academics.…

Future. That’s probably one of the scariest words I know. The future is unpredictable, it’s often wrapped in wrapping paper, ready to be opened and it can both be exciting and disappointing. While I was in Elementary, I dreamed of being a chef, a cop, a fashion designer, a softball player, a singer, and an actor. As soon as I was in middle school, I wanted to be one thing, a singer, I had decided that I liked singing enough for it to be a career, although my vocal range disagreed.…
