As the cool air began to fall, I felt a whiz of a lacrosse ball past my ear as it flew forward and rocketed off the goal post. After another failed attempt I dejectedly went hunting for the ball. Feelings of failure clouded my mind, today had been the third and final day of tryouts. During practice, I had made one successful shot in addition to several missed ones. By the end of practice, it was no surprise that I was not on the announced varsity roster. I was angry with the results and my performance at tryouts. It was my freshman year and after being one of top of junior varsity players last year, I had assumed my spot had been secured. However, it clearly had not been. My confidence had been shattered. I was used to success in athletics, along with academics, the two dominate worlds in my life. So here I was, after everyone else went home, plagued by my mistakes and attempting to restore belief in my abilities. …show more content…

Not eager to relive that loneliness, I made a decision that would change my life in more ways than expected. Giving a timid smile, I accepted her offer and we began to pass the lacrosse ball. Monique, I found, tried out for the team for fun and was just glad she hadn’t been cut. She was also looking to improve her lacrosse skills, and asked if I wouldn’t mind helping. I accepted, realizing that helping Monique would also help myself improve. Our meetings after practice were aimed at developing our lacrosse skills, but resulted in Monique and I becoming fast friends both on and off the

Some thought I was too small, other thought I didn’t have the stick skills, but most players thought I was just too young. These issues were made no secret to me. For my entire eighth grade season I felt left out, beaten down, and exhausted. My 8th grade season consisted of team hangouts; not including me, posters with everyone's name on it; not including me, and after every practice, me waiting to get picked up from 4-6 because no one offered me a ride home; strictly me. These girls I had looked to as potential friends had become the reason I dreaded going to hockey.…

Spring 2016 was my first season playing lacrosse at Edison High School. I was truly excited to learn a new sport. From what I knew, lacrosse was basically soccer with sticks; throwing and catching a ball with a stick seemed a relatively straightforward concept. In the first practice, I wasn’t able to throw or catch a single ball. Whenever I threw the ball, it fell out of my stick and whenever I tried to catch the ball, it bounced off the side or flew past me.…

There’s nothing like the sound of the echoing of balls bouncing, and shoes squeaking on the hardwood floor of a gym. For me this was a very familiar place and sound of the many years playing the sport I love, the game of basketball. This time I wasn’t the one playing, I was coaching. Last fall I was asked by my high school varsity coach if I would help out coaching the freshmen team. My first initial thought was no, but I told him that I would think about it and get back to him as soon as possible.…

For three months in the spring, my life revolves around one thing, lacrosse. I spent the cold morning before class and the hot afternoons after, on the field, I always met the expectations for someone on the team. I ran until I could no longer run, I played in the drills, and I showed up to every game. However, I never played in the games, and that was because I only ever reached the expectations, never raising them. I remember at the end of my freshman year, my coach sat me and a group similar in my abilities down during the last practice.…
